Bio
Patsy Ann, a bull terrier puppy, served as “The Official Greeter of Juneau, Alaska” from 1929 until her death 13 years later. Born in Portland, OR, Patsy Ann was deaf from birth but had a unique ability to sense the arrival of ships by their whistles. She would then quickly trot to the wharf for treats from the sailors and passengers. Patsy Ann was extremely popular and was even more photographed than Rin Tin Tin. In 1934, she was officially recognized by Juneau’s mayor and had postcards made in her honor. Despite suffering from rheumatism, Patsy Ann never lost her love for the wharf and would still waddle over whenever ships arrived. On March 30, 1942, Patsy Ann passed away and was mourned by many.
Monument Description
In 1992, a statue of Patsy Ann was erected on the wharf, cast in bronze with a mixture of dog hair from all over the world.
