Bio
In 2000, John Breaux, also known as “bro,” relocated from California to Colorado as a diagnosed paranoid schizophrenic, but became a beloved figure in Louisville, his new hometown. He dedicated himself to keeping Colorado clean by cycling around the town collecting litter. He was known for his friendly personality and large calloused hands which he would wave at everyone. The town affectionately referred to him as an “angel” and “treasure”. The town rallied to purchase a bike helmet for Breaux, but he still lost his life in a car accident on January 30, 2009.
Monument Description
Louisville commissioned sculptor Dawn Record (who had often encountered Breaux during his trash patrols) and on the first anniversary of his death, unveiled a life-size bronze statue of him. Personal items found on Breaux when he died, such as his watch, necklace chain, and bike, were used to create parts of the statue.
